We get asked about Inkonography™ a lot.
Usually it's one of two questions. The first is: what is it? The second - increasingly, as AI image generation gets louder and louder - is: can't AI just do that now?
Let's answer both.
What it is
Inkonography™ is hand-drawn, hand-inked artwork made specifically for your brand. Not a stock illustration. Not a template with your colours swapped in. Not something generated in thirty seconds by a machine trained on other people's work.
It starts with a brief. A proper one - about your brand, your story, what you're trying to say, who you're saying it to. Then our artist Mailan - who has spent years developing a practice that sits somewhere between fine art and commercial illustration — makes something that has never existed before. Drawn by hand. Inked by hand. Unique to you.
The result is a body of artwork that becomes part of your brand identity. It might be a hero illustration for your website. A series of brand marks for your packaging. An environmental piece for your physical space. Whatever form it takes, it carries something that no generated image can carry: the mark of a human hand, making deliberate choices, for a specific purpose.
Why AI can't do it
Not because AI isn't impressive - it is. Not because AI-generated images aren't sometimes beautiful - they can be.
But AI generates images by predicting what should be there based on what it's seen before. It's a very sophisticated kind of averaging. And averaging doesn't produce something that belongs to you. It produces something that belongs to the middle of everything.
Inkonography™ starts from the opposite place. It starts with you - your specifics, your story, your brief - and builds outward from there. There is no training data that contains your brand. Mailan has to invent it. And that process of invention, that considered, deliberate, human-made thing, is what makes the work genuinely yours.
There's also something practically important here: when AI generates an image, the provenance of that image is murky at best. Who contributed to the training data? What does ownership actually look like? These are questions the industry is still working through.
With Inkonography™, the answer is simple. Mailan made it. We own it. You license it fully. No grey areas.
When it's the right choice
Not every brand needs Inkonography™. It's not a box to tick - it's a decision that should come from strategy, not trend. When does it make sense? When your brand has a story worth telling visually. When you want something that stops people scrolling. When you want to be unmistakeable rather than just recognisable.
If any of that sounds like you - we should talk.
